A year later, at the very time I was reassessing my life, Absolutely Fabulous came on air and I realised that the consumer-led world of hype that Jennifer had so cleverly parodied was indeed a true and accurate reflection of my own frenetic lifestyle. By now I had seriously started to question the value of my success and wealth and what it meant to be acclaimed as the PR guru of the 1980s. I was starting to feel a personal need for a far deeper understanding of myself and the world I inhabited.

As a result I started unwinding with cocaine in the evenings. We’d visit friends and in between lines of coke would spend most of the night rolling joints, drinking wine and talking fifteen to the dozen with none of us listening to each other. It was the frenzied early eighties and I was spinning round in circles poisoning my body and soul with negative drugs and negative people. I was hyper all the time and although able to do my job well was putting excessive stress on my personal life and well being.

Initially the tent was at the Commonwealth Institute in Kensington High Street until the lawn began to sink and we moved to the Duke of York’s Territorial Army headquarters in King’s Road. That was really the start of London Fashion Week. I convinced Mohan Murjani, my client from Gloria Vanderbilt days, that it was important for his international prestige to sponsor the events, and the Murjani Tent was born. I also got other clients like the British Fashion Council, Swatch and Harrods to sponsor the tents – a ‘win-win’ situation for all.
