Next, I will review the limitations in the Categorical Imperative. First, I shall address the categorical nature of action in Kant’s moral theory. A criticism of Kant’s Categorical Imperative is its inability to consider the context or consequences of an action to determine the moral weight of such an action. It is the categorical nature of action prescribed by the Categorical Imperative that precludes, for example, the action of telling a lie, even under dire circumstances, in attempt to prevent a greater injustice.

This is especially the case in institutions that operate in a decentralized mode. The implications of this need for responsibility with authority are that CIOs must have executive or senior level positions in the institutions. They do not need to have direct responsibility for day-to-day operational IT management, but they should have the responsibility to coordinate across IT organizations and activities throughout the institution. They must also have a coordination relationship and authority with those to whom the managers of IT organizations report.

The principle of simple consistency treats similar cases similarly; it takes into consideration the context of moral situations. The weakness in each of the arguments is that neither Hauptman nor Constant provide a method for determining how to formulate the morally correct action for these similar cases. I will then argue that moral philosopher Alan Gewirth has resolved the limitations of Kant and Dowd and those of Constant and Hauptman, while preserving the strengths of each of their arguments.
