As he declared on radio station 2BL after landing in Sydney, ‘this flight was not my flight’. It was a flight by Charles Ulm, Harry Lyon, Jim Warner and the chap that’s talking to you. None could have succeeded without the others.

It was during this brief second stint of active service that Ulm had an introduction to aviation when, while training in Britain, a friend in the Royal Flying Corps took him on several joyflights.
